Saw one of your posts where you talk about using Janitrol as a 2nd or 3rd brand, did you ever check out the Gibson like I suggested?;)

We may have a dealer for that brand but I have never seen it advertised here in town. Who makes it?
Here is the actual order:
Trane, Rheem/Ruud, A/S, Payne/Bryant, Janitrol

Gibson is made by Nordyne. They make a couple of lines.. Kelvinator,Tappan,Gibson, and Frididaire. Gibson is their line to compete with janitrol and their kelvinator is more comparable to Trane or Carrier. We put alot of Gibson in up here in the Northeast. They are very quiet and have a good warranty. The only bad thing about the Gibson line is not much protection on the condensor coil and the only the front of the air handler is powdercoated, the rest is just bare metal.. All and All not bad for the price.. Here is a gibson I put in last month..

Paul, the Gibson air handlers I've installed were powder coated all over, not just the front.
Add one more name to that group, Philco. And actually, the Tappan and the Frigidaire are the premier lines, the Philco and the Kelvinator are the mid lines, and Gibson is the builder line.
Gibson may be priced to compete with Janitrol, but in my opinion it's built ten times better.

Breeze, go to www.nordyne.com and click on Gibson. Then on dealer/servicer locator. Do you have a Century A/C supply near you? They seem to be the biggest Gibson distributor listed for Texas. They also list Core Distributing and (ugh!) Coburn Supply.

they sell a lot of brands... think that is one of them. I don't like to drive far for equipment.
They (Core) send me stuff every so often on there specials.. maybe I will read the next one.

I don't like working with it.. too ichty:( but as long as its sized correct it doesn't matter to me. As long as its residential.. i hate wraping metal duct and I would'nt even think about trying to do it in an attic... but for comercial I wouldn't want to use anthing but metal. And besides all that i still work for somebody(unfortanatly not myself yet) so what ever the boss(not the H-talk boss) wants he gets(within reason of course)....
Stay Cool...

Yes it itches but a cut on sheet metal isn't much fun. I really dont see how you would use sheetmetal on retro jobs down here. You don't have that much room to begin with.

I am still using that old truck for service, the one I posted in images. We used ductboard 25 years ago, my older bro. who was in charge at my Dad's co. bought a machine to cut the aluminum support panels and was really into it. We had demo's from the Mfg. etc. I hated it. Besides the itch (use vinegar in the shower, takes it out, really) the stuff always blew apart. As part of yearly PM we would re-tape the plenums. We even used it on commercial, big mistake. One time we used it on a rooftop, about 30 feet horizontal run, tarred it and all that. guy calls a few weeks later no heat. it was after a big storm. pull into the parking lot and see all the ductboard layiung there. awwhhhhhhhhhhiieeeeeeeeeeeeee
Anyway, I know that's not what it was for but my Bro. was so into it that it just really turned me against it. If you like it then use, I am a metal man and sub it out to great shop that makes it for me. I do mostly commercial anyway.

Sheet metal and exposed ducts look great, to me. I really like that spun aluminum or is it steel? Seen it in a night club years back, it really looks good.
I do res. only, the few calls on commercial I have had turned out to be freebies (friends of mine). I hate metal since I was cut real bad and my hand will never be the same. This wasn't a duct so I shouldn't blame all metal but I do... most metal jobs I see in the res. market are old.. real old, insulation is falling off, some had it on the inside so its all moldy and falling apart. The flex duct now is made better and has higher r values then metal duct, not to say you couldn't make the metal duct more efficient...
I only like the fiber board for plenum and boxes. I staple (when possible) my tape and use mastic. Sometimes I skip the mastic if I am using that high dollar foil tape (gummy back) on very clean surfaces. I also use "hard-as-nails" to fill voids and make fast seals so unit can be turned on sooner.
All this talk about work sure makes me want to work ... hee hee

along comes clouds and rain. Business has been good but today I'm tackling my honeydo list. So far : snaked out a toilet, replaced a washer hose, cleaned out pool filter, planted some flowers. I think I've earned a nap. Anyway we used to use ductboard for plenums, stapled and taped, worked fine. Now we use either factory metal plenums or have a sheetmetal shop fabricate them. In DFW you see sheetmetal duct in the older houses and flex in the new. If I had to replace duct in my house I would use the higher R flex. I'm like you Breeze, I do mostly res. and a little commercial. I don't know how many pairs of tennis shoes I've ruined from those tar roofs. BTW referring to another thread, I've never found boots very comfortable(my arches are too high) so I wear tennis shoes and if it didn't look so unprofessional I would wear sandals. Do any of you guys wear shorts? I live in them from March to November. I've asked some customers if the shorts bother them and they all have said except for your ugly legs no. Before I run this out to novel length I'd better stop.

Now that would be a sight to see. As for the boots, I have never liked them.
I take my shoes off many times when I am in homes... usually before I present the Bill, of course that only effects there eyes, they can still hear well :)
When bad weather comes in my shoes get dirty other times its the dog poop in there back yard. I should have several pairs of shoes, at only $30 each why not.
Shorts, now that would be great but then I need the shoes/socks to match. I just may try that this year.
I do feel safer wearing jeans. I need more shirts, my wife likes to wash them with pens in pockets and then there is the pooky that seems to always land on me not the duct. why dont they sell that stuff in a large caulk like cartridge? with reusable nozzles.. flat - round etc.
Maybe we could design a pump like cover that allows you to pump the mastic through hose to brush... would need to clean it out but the hose could be something cheap/pvc etc.
what was this thread about... i forgot ... it is suppose to rain here too.

Breeze, I forgot to ask you in the last post, How are the Bluebonnets down there? Up here they are disappointing.

I wear shorts and ankle socks and a shoe that will not pick up dirt in the summer. I like wearing shorts so the boys will stay cool. When the boys are cool and happy then they don`t bother me. The boys come first!:p

Maverick: They were ok. Its time to pull mine up and dry um for the seeds. Too bad they don't do that around here on the median. Instead they just mowed um down, which may have saved some seeds but its bound to chop most up.
My pickle rush plant / water plant, has great looking flowers like bluebonnents and lasts most all summer.

Hey Breeze,
I wear shorts and boots all the time. Yeah, my legs get scratched up, but so be it.

I like the idea... this way when I fall in there pool I can just hang out for awhile.
And when the attics are 138° I am soaking wet anyway so why not wear a bathing suit.
When I get home I will be all ready to take a dip in the tub...
