Went to work on an old 15 ton york pkg unit today, shut down the service disconnect, started reaching around in the controls section, still heard buzzing from various components (xfmr, etc). Apparently some electrican back in the stone age decided to bypass the fuses in the disconnect and wire the line and load side to the same lugs. Had I been electrocuted to death, boy would he feel bad. :D Expect the unexpected, and assume nothing:cool:

Good reminder Analog. I carry a tick tracer / pocket volt checker, greenlee makes a nice always on one. Resi. units pack a punch too, maybe worse because 120 vac may not throw you off.
I have had breakers where only one side turns off, the ole by passed fused disconnect trick and then the ever common transposed CU / Air handler breaker label.

A few of my techs went to change seals in a leaking pump and then we got a call that the walk-in box was down. Turns out they were on the same breaker!

Are you not required to install a separate disconnect within 6 feet of the machine? Even on existing equipment, when it has a problem and needs work, we are required to bring it up to code compliance.

Yes, we did.
